Pedro Martinez Returns to Boston Red Sox
On Thursday, the three-time Cy Young Award winner and eight-time All-Star who spent seven seasons in a Boston Red Sox uniform, was brought back to the franchise. He will serve as a special as <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> sistant to general manager Ben Cherington.
"(Pedro) was one of the game's most dominant pitchers and without a doubt a beloved figure in Red Sox history," Cherington said. "Similar to former teammate Jason Varitek, who joined the baseball operations staff in September, Pedro will be involved in several areas, including the evaluation, mentorship, and instruction of young players in spring training and throughout the season."
Martinez, who is Dominican, became a Red Sox starting pitcher in 1998 and was a key cog in the 2004 team that brought a World Series title to Boston for the first time since 1918. With the Red Sox, he went 117-37 with a 2.52 ERA. He has the best winning percentage (.760) in franchise history, and ranks third in strikeouts (1,683) and sixth in wins (117). Martinez is also the franchise's all-time leader in postseason strikeouts (80).
"I am thrilled to be returning to this organization and to the city <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> I love," Martinez said. "Ben Cherington's meetings this week have been outstanding. It is an honor to be back with the Red Sox and help in any way I can. I am grateful to our leaders; I believe in them, and I thank them for allowing me to return to the field and help us win again.
"My heart will always live in Boston."
During his 18-year major league career, Martinez went 219-100 with a 2.93 ERA and 3,154 strikeouts. His has a career .687 winning percentage, and led the majors in ERA on five occasions, including 1997 with the Montreal Expos (1.90). He also started and notched the win in the 1999 All-Star Game at Fenway Park.
Signed originally in 1988 by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Martinez also played for the New York Mets and P <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> hiladelphia Phillies.

Investigan la muerte de 280 tortugas marinas en el PacÃfico sur de Costa Rica
Las autoridades costarricenses iniciaron hoy una investigación formal para determinar qué causó la muerte de unas 280 tortugas marinas en Golfo Dulce, en el PacÃfico sur, y que fue denunciada por la organización ambientalista Widecast.
El ministerio de Ambiente informó hoy que abrió una investigación a cargo del viceministerio de Agua y Mares, cuyo titular, José Lino Chaves, convocó a una reunión urgente a au <a href={url}>{keyword}</a>toridades del Servicio Nacional de Guardacostas, del Sistema Nacional de Ãreas de Conservación y a varias organizaciones especializadas en temas marinos.
"El objetivo inicial es recabar información y comprobar si se trató de una hecho provocado por acción humana", señala un comunicado oficial.
La alerta sobre el hallazgo de las tortugas muertas fue dada por la organización ecologista Widecast, que a su vez recibió el informe de parte de vecinos de la zona, en la PenÃnsula de Osa.
Los reportes de los ambientalistas detallan que junto a las tortugas también han aparecido otros ejemplares como el pez vela y marlin.
"Este varamiento masivo nos tiene en alerta, en particular porque hoy mismo recibimos la comunicación de la Autoridad de Recursos Marinos de Panamá (ARAP) que nos informa de un hecho similar, con muerte masiva de tortugas lora en zonas como el Golfo de ChiriquÃ, Coiba y Puerto Armuelles", aseguró el presidente de Widecast, Didier Chacón.
"Si este es el caso, estarÃamos frente a un hecho <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> que afecta a dos paÃses y por tanto el caso toma mayor relevancia y es aún más urgente determinar las causas de este hallazgo", añadió.
Aún no se <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> puede determinar la causa de la muerte de los quelonios, pero algunas hipótesis apuntan a la pesca incidental como la culpable, por el uso de lÃneas de pesca de arrastre de varios kilómetros.
"Este hallazgo coincide precisamente con reportes sobre la presencia reiterada de al menos once barcos de palangre, capturando ilegalmente con carnada viva en esa zona", señaló Chacón a medios locales.
Según Chacón, una sola lÃnea de pesca tiene la capacidad de causar la muerte a estos animales.
